What We Do
Creating Safe, Creative Spaces Through Music
Understanding the Systems and Challenges
Turning Music Into a Pathway Forward
By building student-driven music programs rooted in community and care, this work responds directly to the systems and conditions young people face. Understanding those challenges — and how creative, consistent support can interrupt them — is central to how Beyond the Bars operates.
The Challenge
The Challenges Facing Our
Young People
Philadelphia is the poorest large city in America and consistently ranks among the highest in gun violence, with hundreds of lives lost each year. Despite being home to brilliant young people and dedicated community leaders, decades of divestment have left schools underfunded and stripped of critical resources. Access to creative outlets, mentorship, and future pathways — including music programs — is often unavailable to the youth who need them most.
Across the city, student-centered programs and guidance counselors are frequently cut while policing within schools continues to increase. Philadelphia is the only major city in the country with more school police officers than guidance counselors. Without safe spaces to express emotions, process trauma, or explore their futures, young people are too often pushed into the school-to-prison pipeline — a system that limits opportunity and prioritizes punishment over growth.
The Response
Interrupting the School to
Prison Pipeline
Beyond the Bars works to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline by creating community-based music programs for youth impacted by violence, trauma, homelessness, and systemic harm. Through partnerships with artists, facilitators, and community organizations, programs are built alongside students to reflect their voices, strengths, and potential within their own neighborhoods. These programs prioritize creativity, consistency, and trust as foundations for long-term growth.
In collaboration with diversion partners and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, Beyond the Bars offers alternatives to punitive systems rooted in music, mentorship, and support. Programs also serve youth who are currently incarcerated, creating safe spaces for self-expression, healing, and future planning. When students return to their communities, they are welcomed into continued free programming — ensuring support does not end when a system does.
